Have you heard of the Steve Jobs Reality distortion field? It was the bubble in which Steve Jobs and Apple to an extent existed in. A bubble that allowed people to amazing things because they believed Steve’s words above all other data.
You need to create your own reality distortion field in which you and your team sit. A startup is like pushing a bus, it’s really really hard in the beginning as you try and shift a mighty weight but once it’s rolling it gets easier. You’ll have lot’s of different data sources and sometimes your own intuition showing you red lights.
A classic red light is from AirBnb a product that launched with extremely low traction. A lot of folks gave it a red light because they couldn’t disconnect from the status quo. Hotels were where you stayed when you traveled and staying with someone random was scary. Once a user tried it they understood exactly why they needed it. Once doubted, AirBnb is worth an estimated 24 billion dollars.
You need to make your team believe they’re on a rocketship to the unicorn club and that you have the answers. You can’t let your team lose faith in your ability to maintain the vision.
