So you’ve got a sleek idea and you’ve created a minimum viable product. You’re brainstorming names and hit on a golden one, but can’t get the domain name.
I hear this story all the time and all is not lost! There are many ways to get the domain you want. I’ve outlined some methods below.
- Do you need your exact name? Lots of apps with web landing page add “app” or “theapp” to the end of their domain. So you could use coolstartupapp.com or coolstartuptheapp.com instead.
- Can you use a new domain extension? Instead of using the typical .com you could consider one of the many new extensions. You could grab coolstartup.club or maybe coolstartup.tips. A big trend for startups as well is to utilise the .io extension – it’s actually for the Indian Ocean but everyone’s been using it to symbolise input/output.
- Can you change your name? You could keep the core of your name but add something to the end. You can get the creative juices flowing with some help from www.naminum.com. Consider some common naming themes you’ll see in startup land. Adding “ify” is pretty common like Adify, Crowdify, Mobify, Navify, Optify, Shopify, Spotify, Storify or Typify.
- Can you get away with a geo-specific extension? Businesses with products or services offered locally can easily get away with .au or .nz style domain. Just remember you’ll need an ABN to grab a .com.au.
If all else fails, get back to that whiteboard and brainstorm some more names!
